"Random" News

We're keeping the news brief in this issue because of the extensive special offers listed below. The next e-zine will be much more news intensive!

  • Some 53 percent of parents feel that their children would benefit from individualized attention tailored to their unique learning styles and capabilities., according to the LearningPays.com/Yankelovich Study of Parental Involvement in Education.

  • In the same survey, a total of 78 percent said they would become more involved with their children's school experience if they had greater access to teachers, curriculum and event schedules via the Internet.

  • New research shows that, while critically important, the early years are not the only "window of opportunity" for brain development. An article in "Nature" says that from three to six most brain growth occurs in the frontal circuits, an area related to organization and planning–but the brain continues to change structurally though age 15 and in the later years growth is seen in the area of the brain which has been linked to language learning and spatial understanding.

  • The 26th Annual International Conference on Accelerated Learning is January 11-14 2001 in Orlando, Florida. The conference has over 70 workshop sessions designed and led by experts from across the globe. Early bird discounts are available now. For more information visit the web site of the International Alliance for Learning. http://www.ialearn.org

  • Learning Styles: The Chicago Tribune carried a major article recently about the benefits of identifying and working with a child's preferred learning style. Headlined "A Custom Fit: Tailoring Education Suits A Wide Range of Learning Styles," the feature appeared in the June 11 issue. On NBC's Today show, on June 16, President Clinton, supporting VH1's "Save The Music" campaign, said, "Not everyone learns the same way. Not everyone's brain is stimulated the same way."

New Learning Styles Book

"Discover Your Child's Learning Style" is a 325 page paperback, published by Prima. In it, longtime educators Mariaemma Willis and Victoria Kindle-Hodson suggest that there are more aspects to a student's learning style beyond the simple modes of visual, auditory or kinesthetic. Their "learning style profile" takes into account a child's talents, interests, preferred learning environment, and disposition, as well as the three more familiar modes. Written as a workbook, with a series of do-it-yourself assessments, the guide offers parents a chance to work out their child's preferred style. A chart of activities accompanies each style.
